Who are HOPEHIV?

HOPEHIV, a UK registered charity, believes passionately that children and young people who are orphaned by HIV and AIDS can, with support, develop the foundations they need for a brighter future.

Our projects seek to build the resilience and coping skills of these vulnerable children so that despite the many challenges they face, they can be part of a lasting solution for the future of Africa.

HOPEHIV supports carefully selected and dedicated African partner organisations working across sub-Saharan Africa.

Our relationships with over thirty diverse partners in East and Southern Africa reach children across 11 countries, touching over 400 communities. Since our work began in 1999, it has directly transformed the lives of over 100,000 orphans helping them back to school; providing emotional support; challenging the stigma they often face and providing special support for the most vulnerable children, those who are heading up their own households or being supported by elderly guardians.

We encourage innovative projects that discover new ways of developing children's potential such as using play and drama therapy to record memories. We facilitate the multiplication of successful models of care and support to impact more and more children and equip others.

HOPEHIV emphasises the critical importance of developing young people as leaders to replace a generation of existing leaders who have been decimated across Africa by HIV/AIDS. With intensive support and empowerment, these young people can rise to meet the challenges facing Africa today and become part of the solution rather a perceived burden.

Gordon Brown speaking at the launch of generationAFRICA

In November 2005, HOPEHIV launched generationAFRICA, the world's first orphan-focused leadership foundation, at a reception in Downing Street, hosted by Chancellor Gordon Brown.

HOPEHIV manages its close relationships with its partners from its Africa office. Rigorous application procedures and financial and performance reporting ensure that every penny of the money raised makes a difference on the ground to these vulnerable children in an effective and accountable way.
